e-cigarettes proving to be as effective as nicotine patch, more appealing

In light of the previous headlines talking about the gateway effect concern of e-cigs, here’s another study that further supports the potential benefits of e-cigarettes, even as public policy experts consider the risks and benefits of this new product. The study showed that e-cigarettes may hold in helping smokers to quit, at least as well as alternatives.  The research, published in the Lancet Medical Journal, was performed in New Zealand and tested the effectiveness of nicotine e-cigarettes, nicotine patches, and an e-cigarette without nicotine (described as a placebo, but more on that later). The results showed that the nicotine e-cigarette performed better than the patch in quitting, with 7.8% of the users being smoker free after 6...

CDC reports increased trial of e-cigs among teens, but read the whole story

The U.S. Center for Disease Control recently released a news release that reported 1 in 10 teens tried e-cigs in 2012, doubling the use reported in 2011.  These statistics, like all data, can be used to support either side of this debate, and to make headlines.  For example, the 10% use is based on surveys of whether those teens had ever tried an e-cigarette, even one time.  Also, 76.3% of those that had tried e-cigs were already smokers.  That statistic limits the argument of the gateway effect, but more on that later.  There are some valid questions and concerns about teen or non-smoker use of e-cigarettes and nicotine, and the research is being done now to learn more. The Houston Chronicle had a story about this survey that looked a...

E-cigarettes as good as patches in helping smokers quit

September 7, 2013 / NBCNews.com / — Electronic cigarettes work about as well as nicotine patches in helping smokers kick the habit, researchers report. And e-cigarettes helped people smoke fewer cigarettes overall, even if they didn’t quit completely. The study is the first major piece of research to show that the products, which deliver a nicotine mist using a cigarette-shaped pipe, can actually benefit smokers. The findings, published in the Lancet medical journal, are not quite enough to make public health experts embrace e-cigarettes, which are not yet regulated and which are growing in popularity. But it’s enough to make them look more closely at whether there may be some benefit to them. “You’re trading one addiction...

Italian study highlights the promise of e-cigarettes as cessation tools

A recent study out of Europe is one of the first to have enough longitudinal data to provide a baseline to the continuing discussion of e-cigarettes.  The conclusions of the authors are that e-cigarettes are an interesting alternative to smoking, and they believe their study can become a baseline in further comparisons of e-cigarettes versus other products for smokers. Depending on which side of the fence you’re on, you either believe that this study validates the claims of e-cig proponents or it does not provide enough data to allow the use of e-cigs.  The former believe that they can be an effective cessation tool and are far healthier than the alternative of continuing to smoke.  Because the study focused on those not trying to...

Reaffirming what has been cited in earlier surveys and research, Gallup recently completely a survey that indicated most smokers in the U.S. would like to quit, with 85% saying they have tried to quit smoking. There were a few interesting items in their survey results: 1)      The percentage of those wanting to quit, and the percentage that do not want to quit, have stayed relatively stable over the last 12 years.  It hovers up and down but has averaged 74%. 2)      The percentage who would like to quit has actually dropped in the last 6 years (74% compared to 80% from 2001 – 2004) 3)      45% of those surveyed had tried to quit at least 3 times. 4)      48% of those that have been successful did so by quitting cold turkey Our...

e-Cigs are Shifting the Debate

Posted By :

Last week the New York Times had a series of articles in their Room for Debate section about whether e-cigarettes are a safer way to help smokers quit.  Before that NPR’s Diane Rehm Show had guests on talking about Smoking in America but very pointedly focused on e-cigs.  Both provided some healthy debate on and positively tried to stay What seems to be clear is that the debate has shifted, due to the credible reduced harm nature of e-cigarettes in comparison to cigarettes, and the strong and growing appeal of e-cigarettes with smokers.  In a world where there are very few perfect solutions and trade-offs need to be made, e-cigarettes seem to present a viable alternative for smokers that want to quit, may have tried unsuccessfully with...
